Key Insights
- ChatGPT Ads Manager has opened to advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, reaching a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days.
- OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Paid placements appear separately below the response, so advertising cannot buy inclusion in the AI's recommendation.
- Ads are only shown to Free and Go plan users; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users remain ad-free, which means many high-value audiences cannot be reached through ChatGPT advertising.
- Organic AI visibility is platform-independent: building digital authority across websites, publishers, reviews, communities and structured information strengthens how all AI systems understand and recommend a brand.
- DareAISearch helps brands measure AI visibility, understand why AI recommends competitors, and turn that intelligence into actions across owned, controlled and third-party surfaces.
ChatGPT Ads are officially becoming a serious advertising channel.
What started as a US pilot in February 2026 has expanded rapidly. OpenAI has launched advertising across multiple markets and, as of August 31, opened ChatGPT Ads Manager to advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
OpenAI also says ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers already using the platform.
For marketers, this is a significant moment.
Google built one of the world's largest advertising businesses around search intent. Meta built another around audience and interest signals.
ChatGPT introduces something potentially different: conversational intent.
A user isn't simply typing:
> running shoes
They might be asking:
> What are the best running shoes for a beginner training for their first half marathon who has slightly flat feet and wants something under ₹15,000?
That context is incredibly valuable for advertisers.
And ChatGPT Ads will almost certainly become an important part of the performance marketing mix.
But there is something equally important brands need to understand:
Buying a ChatGPT Ad does not make ChatGPT recommend your brand.
And that distinction may completely change how brands think about AI Search.
First, How Do ChatGPT Ads Actually Work?
ChatGPT Ads are currently displayed separately from ChatGPT's organic response.
OpenAI explicitly states that advertisements do not influence the answers ChatGPT generates. Advertisers cannot pay to alter, rank or shape the brands ChatGPT mentions in its response.
Ads appear as clearly labelled sponsored placements below the response.
That means the experience could look something like this.
A user asks: "What are the best running shoes for beginners?"
ChatGPT responds:
- Brand A: best overall
- Brand B: best for cushioning
- Brand C: best value
And underneath that answer appears:
Sponsored: Brand D
Brand D successfully bought advertising visibility.
But Brand A, Brand B and Brand C earned something potentially more valuable: the recommendation itself.
That difference is at the centre of the next generation of search marketing.
Paid Visibility and AI Recommendation Are Not the Same Thing
Traditional search conditioned marketers to think about a results page.
You had organic results. You had paid results. Both competed for roughly the same interface.
Conversational AI changes this.
The AI itself synthesises information and produces an answer before the advertisement appears.
By the time a sponsored placement is shown, the user may already have received:
- recommended brands
- product comparisons
- pros and cons
- suggested alternatives
- pricing considerations
- explanations for why one brand may be better than another
The user's consideration set can therefore begin forming inside the AI-generated answer itself.
The advertisement comes afterwards.
And OpenAI makes another important distinction: a ChatGPT advertisement is not an endorsement by OpenAI or ChatGPT.
So brands now potentially have two separate battles to win:
- Paid AI Visibility: Can we get our advertisement in front of a relevant user?
- Organic AI Visibility: Does the AI actually understand, trust, mention and recommend our brand?
You probably want both. But they are not interchangeable.
Why ChatGPT Ads Are Still Far From a Complete Search Strategy
ChatGPT Ads are evolving rapidly.
OpenAI already supports CPM, CPC and conversion-optimised campaigns, contextual signals, geographic targeting, platform targeting, custom audiences and conversion measurement.
That is meaningful progress. But several structural limitations remain.
1. Ads Still Don't Get You Into the Answer
This is the biggest one.
Advertising can give a brand sponsored exposure. It cannot currently purchase inclusion inside ChatGPT's organic answer.
OpenAI has been explicit about maintaining answer independence: advertising and answer generation operate separately.
If someone asks: "Which are the best skincare brands for sensitive skin?"
A skincare company may be able to advertise around that conversation. But advertising does not guarantee that ChatGPT will include that company when constructing the actual recommendation.
For that, the brand needs something else: organic AI authority.
2. A Large Part of ChatGPT's Audience Doesn't See Ads At All
ChatGPT advertisements are not currently shown across the entire ChatGPT user base.
OpenAI says ads may appear for users on its Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free.
Think about what that means for certain categories:
- A SaaS business targeting founders.
- An enterprise software company targeting senior executives.
- A financial institution targeting affluent customers.
- A B2B company targeting professionals.
Many of their highest-value potential customers may disproportionately use paid or workplace versions of AI assistants.
You cannot rely on advertising to reach users who never see the advertisements.
Organic AI visibility has no such dependency. If your brand becomes part of the model's consideration and recommendation layer, it can potentially appear whenever the AI finds it relevant, regardless of whether the user is on an ad-supported tier.
3. ChatGPT Advertising Is Not Traditional Keyword Advertising
Google Ads gave marketers a familiar mechanism: choose keyword, bid, measure.
ChatGPT Ads are more contextual.
Advertisers can provide context hints describing conversations, needs and situations where their offering may be relevant. But OpenAI explicitly says these context hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear for a particular conversation, topic or phrase.
That makes sense. AI conversations are far richer than keywords.
But it also means marketers are entering a new advertising environment where targeting and intent work differently from traditional paid search.
4. The Advertising Platform Is Still Maturing
OpenAI has moved remarkably quickly. There are now conversion campaigns, custom audiences, geographic controls and measurement infrastructure.
But it is still a young advertising ecosystem compared with platforms that marketers have been optimising for over decades.
For example, OpenAI's current campaign documentation notes that device insights are grouped primarily into Mobile and Desktop, with more detailed platform reporting still planned. Geographic targeting is also currently more granular in certain markets than others.
This will improve. Probably very quickly.
But brands should be careful about treating ChatGPT Ads today as if they already have the maturity, predictability and optimisation ecosystem of Google Ads. ChatGPT Ads can still be valuable while the product evolves.
But There Is an Even Bigger Reason Organic AI Search Matters
ChatGPT is only one AI discovery environment.
Consumers increasingly use ChatGPT, Google AI experiences, Gemini, Perplexity, AI shopping assistants, voice assistants, and whatever comes next.
Buying advertising on one platform gives you visibility on that platform, when that advertisement is eligible to appear.
Building organic AI authority is different. You are strengthening the underlying digital footprint that AI systems use to understand your brand.
That might include:
- your website
- product and category pages
- structured information
- publisher mentions
- comparison articles
- reviews
- Reddit and communities
- YouTube
- Google Business Profiles
- third-party authoritative sources
- consistent brand information across the web
- evidence connecting your brand to particular categories, use cases and customer needs
This is why we believe the conversation needs to move beyond simply asking: "How do I advertise on ChatGPT?"
The bigger question is: "Why would ChatGPT recommend my brand in the first place?"
The Search Funnel Is Splitting Into Paid Visibility and Earned Preference
Imagine a consumer asking: "I need comfortable running shoes for a first marathon. I am choosing between ASICS, Nike and Adidas. What should I buy?"
There are potentially several layers of influence:
- The AI answer: Which brands does the model discuss?
- Recommendation: Which product does it recommend?
- Reasoning: What evidence does it use to justify that recommendation?
- Sources: Which websites, publishers, reviews or communities influence or support that answer?
- Advertising: Which advertiser receives sponsored visibility around the conversation?
Most marketing teams today have systems for Layer 5. Far fewer have infrastructure for Layers 1 to 4.
That is the problem DareAISearch is built to solve.
This Is Where AI Search Optimization Becomes Critical
Brands need to start treating AI recommendation visibility as a measurable growth channel.
It should be possible to answer questions such as:
- When customers ask AI about our category, how often are we mentioned?
- How frequently are competitors recommended instead of us?
- Which prompts represent the highest purchase intent?
- Which websites and sources are shaping AI's understanding of our category?
- What does AI believe about our brand?
- Where does that perception differ from what the brand actually wants to communicate?
- Why is a competitor being recommended when we aren't?
And most importantly: What should we change to improve it?
That requires much more than monitoring ChatGPT answers. It requires connecting analytics, intelligence and execution.
How DareAISearch Approaches the Problem
At DareAISearch, we help brands understand and improve how they are discovered, considered and recommended across AI Search. We look beyond a simple visibility score.
The platform helps brands understand:
- What AI is saying: Track brand mentions, recommendations, competitors, sentiment and visibility across high-intent prompts.
- Why AI is saying it: Understand the citations, publishers, communities, pages and signals influencing AI responses.
- Where the opportunity exists: Identify gaps across the customer journey, from discovery prompts to comparison and decision-stage conversations.
- What needs to change: Generate intelligence around content, landing pages, brand positioning, third-party sources, communities and other digital assets.
- And then help execute: Because knowing that your brand isn't visible is only useful if you can actually change it.
DareAISearch connects AI Search intelligence with deployment across owned, controlled and third-party surfaces.
ChatGPT Ads vs Organic AI Search Optimization
| ChatGPT Ads | Organic AI Search Optimization |
|---|---|
| Paid visibility | Earned visibility |
| Sponsored placement | AI mention/recommendation |
| Appears separately from the answer | Can influence whether your brand becomes part of the answer |
| Available only to ad-supported audiences | Relevant across organic AI interactions |
| Stops when spend stops | Builds longer-term digital authority |
| Primarily ChatGPT-specific | Can strengthen visibility across multiple AI ecosystems |
| Optimises advertising performance | Optimises AI understanding, consideration and recommendation |
The conclusion isn't ads versus organic. The future will almost certainly require both. The mistake would be assuming one replaces the other.
ChatGPT Ads May Actually Make Organic AI Visibility More Valuable
There is an interesting paradox here.
The larger AI advertising becomes, the more valuable organic recommendation may become.
Why? Because users will increasingly learn the difference between sponsored because someone paid to appear and recommended because the AI independently selected the brand.
That distinction already exists in traditional search. But conversational AI could make it even more pronounced because the recommendation arrives inside an explanatory answer.
The AI isn't simply showing ten blue links. It may say: "I would choose Brand X because..."
That sentence could become one of the most valuable pieces of digital real estate on the internet.
And currently, brands cannot buy it. They have to earn it.
The New Search Strategy: Paid + Organic + Intelligence
ChatGPT Ads deserve attention.
For many brands, experimenting early will make sense. Conversational advertising could become an enormous performance marketing channel, and marketers should start learning how it behaves now rather than waiting until the ecosystem is mature.
But don't confuse buying visibility around an AI answer with being part of the AI answer.
The brands that win AI Search will likely build both capabilities. They will understand when to buy attention. But they will also systematically build the digital authority required for AI systems to understand, trust and recommend them organically.
Because your next customer may not search: "Brand X."
They may simply ask: "What should I buy?"
And before worrying about whether your advertisement appears underneath the answer, there is a more fundamental question: Will your brand be in the answer?
